Lycaste Imshootiana
is a primary hybrid of Lycaste cruenta X Lycaste skinneri, registered
in 1893. This blooming plant, photographed in December 2003,
is growing in an eight-inch plastic pot of coir (ground coconut
husk substrate).
The four-inch
flowers are born singly on inflorescences arising from the base
of the deciduous pseudobulbs. Each pseudobulb produces six to
ten flower stems. The flowers are mildly fragrant of cinnamon
and nutmeg.
Lycaste Imshootiana
produces new growth in the spring and should be kept very moist
and heavily fertilized throughout spring and summer. The plants
start to go deciduous in autumn and water should be cut back
severely and fertilizing curtailed. The flowers begin to emerge
shortly thereafter and last for four to six weeks.
